Seeing all of Porto in just a day may seem ambitious, and in fact it is,  but fear not! This ultimate guide is crafted to ensure you make the most of your limited time in this enchanting city. Of course we recommend you enjoy a longer stay, but if you only have one day fasten your seatbelt and embark on a journey through Porto’s iconic landmarks with us!

1. Livraria Lello

Begin your day in the heart of literature at Livraria Lello, one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores. Marvel at the ornate architecture and immerse yourself in the literary atmosphere that has inspired countless writers, including J. K. Rowling who has worked on the Harry Potter saga in none other than the city of Oporto. If you consider yourself a “Potterhead”, you can’t miss this first stop.

2. Igreja do Carmo

Just up the street, you can already see Igreja do Carmo, a mesmerizing church adorned with exquisite blue azulejos, telling tales of Porto’s rich history. The adjoining Carmelitas Church, separated by the narrowest house in Porto, adds to the allure. Go take a look, and tell us if you think you could live there!

3. São Bento Train Station

Time to head down to the São Bento Train Station, where the walls are adorned with intricate tilework, narrating the city’s past. The best part is that you don’t need a ticket to stop and take a moment to absorb the historical ambiance.

4. Have some lunch!

When you go down, the next step is always to go up again. This is a pattern you will be able to detect if you decide to visit Porto by walking, so this may be a good time to sit down and enjoy a nutritious lunch! We have a handful of suggestions of our top pics of some different dishes you could try right here.

5. Santa Catarina Street

After the last milestone, you will head to the Chapel of Souls which will give you a chance to also explore Santa Catarina Street, a hotspot of movement and city life. While you are at it, make sure you go to Majestic, a caffe filled with history, and for the potterheads, one of the spots where J.K. Rowling used to write while at Porto. You might feel inspired too!

6. Porto Cathedral

Head to Porto Cathedral, a commanding structure offering panoramic views of the city. Explore its medieval cloisters and immerse yourself in the historical ambiance.

7. Guindais Funicular

A short walk from the Cathedral will get you to the Guindais Funicular, where you can descend for a unique perspective of Porto. The scenic ride provides a picturesque preview of your next destination.

8. Ribeira

Dive into the heart of Porto with a visit to Ribeira. Stroll along the riverbank, absorb the vibrant atmosphere, and perhaps indulge in some local cuisine. If you have the time, we recommend you dive into our post on what to do in ribeira!

9. D. Luis Bridge

Cross the D. Luis Bridge on foot, enjoying panoramic views of the city and the Douro River. On the other side of the bridge, Cais de Gaia awaits you with a myriad of Port Wine cellars waiting for you to go in and have a taste!

10. Cable Car with a destination to the best Sunset view of the city

Take the cable car (Teleférico de Gaia) up for a bird’s eye view of the city. Cap off your day by enjoying the sunset at Jardim do Morro, a serene garden offering stunning vistas of Porto.
